Sandalwood Oil is an essential oil derived from the wood of the white sandalwood (Santalum album). This evergreen 10-meter thick tropical tree grows in the mountains of southeastern India. Valuable essential oils accumulate in the roots and core of white sandalwood, but the tree must be at least 30 years old. The darker the wood of the white sandalwood, the more oil can be obtained from it.
Of all the species of sandalwood, the most valuable and famous is the Indian sandalwood (santalum album), or white sandalwood – “real sandalwood”. White sandalwood oil contains the highest amount of sandalwood (95%) – the most important substance in sandalwood oil, determining its value.
Aroma: soft woody, forest; sometimes with prominent upward sharp notes of bitter spicy freshness.
To extract the essential oil, the wood of sandalwood is crushed, soaked in water, and then distilled with high-pressure steam. Steam distillation lasts 2-3 days, resulting in a dense and viscous oily liquid with a persistent sweetish-spicy refined aroma with woody-resinous and wax notes. The resulting sandalwood oil varies in color from light yellow to brown, sometimes with a greenish tint. Sandalwood oil is insoluble in water but highly soluble in alcohols and mineral oils. The quality of the oil improves over time, although it may harden during storage.
