Marigolds, widely known ornamental flowers, are called Calendula Officinalis in botany. They are also grown as a medicinal plant in temperate climates, from Europe to Australia.
In the Middle Ages, calendula was used as a spice and a substitute for saffron because calendula was credited with improving mood.
Currently, calendula oil extracts are included in almost all official pharmacopeias of the world as a bactericidal agent against staphylococci and streptococci, a sedative, hemostatic, wound-healing and choleretic agent.
