Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a plant native to the eastern Mediterranean and found in all temperate climates on the planet.
It has been cultivated since Antiquity as a condiment plant and for its nectar, which attracts bees. Melissa comes from a Greek word meaning “honey bee.”
It exhales a sweet lemony scent when its leaves are crumpled.
It was used as far back as the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep, improve appetite, and ease pain and discomfort from indigestion.
